When it goes on sale next month, the new 2024 CX-90 three-row SUV will be Mazda's first plug-in hybrid model in the United States. The business stated that a PHEV option will be provided, in addition to the previously mentioned inline-six engine, and partially displayed the crossover's back end and its "e-Skyactiv PHEV" emblem with blue highlights.

We anticipate that the plug-in hybrid variant will be similar to the Europe-market CX-60, which we drove earlier this year. This SUV, which has the same longitudinal platform as the CX-90, is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine and an electric motor, producing 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

Based on what we've seen so far, we believe the CX-90's appearance will be largely consistent with Mazda's current SUV lineup, with the exception of a more angular and futuristic taillight style. Its inside is also anticipated to be sumptuous, as the CX-90 is part of Mazda's continuous push upmarket. This new model's longitudinal base and inline-six engine will help it compete with premium-brand SUVs, as will this PHEV option, which might compete with hybrid SUVs like the BMW X5, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Volvo XC90.

So, based on all of the "hints," it appears that the Mazda CX-90 will replace the Mazda CX-9 in the model lineup. After all, we won't know all the specifics until 2023, which isn't far away.
