The first 1971 BMW 3.0 CSL was built specifically for the European Touring Car Championship. Now, almost 50 years later, BMW has introduced a new 3.0 CSL based on the new generation M3/M4.

At first glance, the 3.0 CSL looks more like the modern-day coupes of BMW's new lineup than before; This is not a full-on retro styling car with round headlights. However, there are somewhat obvious visual differences between the two CSLs, including flared fenders and quarter panels, a roof-mounted spoiler made of fibre glass-reinforced plastic and a rear wing similar to the unit fitted on the earlier car. The 1972 3.0 CSL was nicknamed the "Batmobile" because of its wing. The company will give you the spoiler as an accessory and the owners have to get it installed on their own.
