2022 Volvo XC40 Review, Pricing, and Specs

The even more stylish 2022 XC40 is a trendy and youthful addition to Volvo's already fashionable SUV portfolio. The T4 is the entry-level model, with a 184-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but the T5, with 248 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive, is the most powerful. The XC40 also comes with plenty of technology, including various driver aids that are similar to those found in Volvo's higher-end models, such as the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving mode. The XC40 isn't all flair, though. Its cabin is well-designed, with plenty of storage options, and its cargo compartment is roomy, earning it a spot on our Editors' Choice list. Furthermore, when compared to German rivals like the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-class, the Volvo's higher price tag is a plus.

What's New for the Year 2022?

For 2022, Volvo's smallest SUV receives only minor updates. A power-operated liftgate, front fog lamps, and rear child locks are no longer standard on the XC40. Wireless smartphone charging is available on the mid-range R-Design and expensive Inscription versions, and consumers who wish it can pay extra for the power liftgate as a standalone option on all variants.

We'd go with the T5 R-Design, not only for the all-wheel drive's seasonal security, but also for the more powerful 248-hp engine. Navigation, a panoramic roof, and a sporty flair come standard on the T5 R-Design. The Climate package, which includes heated back seats, steering wheel, and headlight washers, and the Advanced package, which includes adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous mode, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area, are all recommended.

Performance, Engine, and Transmission -

Every XC40 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces either 184 or 248 horsepower (called T4 and T5, respectively). Our Momentum test vehicle sped to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds thanks to the more powerful T5, which is only available with all-wheel drive. The eight-speed automatic gearbox shifts gears quickly and easily, with no hardness transmitted to the cabin. The engine's rough sound while being under heavy throttle is our only gripe. The powerplant is quiet and smooth when cruising. The XC40 has a towing load of 3500 pounds, which really is unusual for a small luxury crossover.

Real-World MPG and Fuel Economy -

Despite the EPA's class-leading fuel-economy ratings (22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway), the XC40 T5 only got 29 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, which was below average for the sector. In our testing, the Mercedes-Benz GLB250 easily outperformed the XC40, achieving 32 miles per gallon. The front-wheel-drive T4 variant gets 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the interstate, according to the EPA. Visit the EPA's website for additional information on the XC40's fuel efficiency.

Cargo, Interior, and Comfort -

Inside the XC40, modern Swedish aesthetics meets a fun and utilitarian design. Even in the lowest Momentum trim, the cabin's light and open ambiance gives it a very upmarket feel. Both the front and rear seats have plenty of room for passengers. The XC40, like its more expensive siblings, the XC60 and XC90, is utilitarian, well-made, and attractively styled on the inside, if not quite as plush and opulent. In the cabins of the Momentum and R-Design trims, Volvo designers included more youthful touches, such as textured metallic trim in place of traditional wood inserts and rectangular shapes vents with floating chrome adjusters. Top-of-the-line With driftwood trim and an Orrefors crystal shift knob, Inscription versions have a more refined appearance. With the rear seats foldable, the XC40 would fit 23 carry-on suitcases in our luggage test. Volvo has also incorporated a variety of innovative cargo-storage elements throughout the XC40's interior, including a glovebox hook that holds takeaway bags, a cargo divider, and a removable garbage bin with a hinged door in the center console.

Connectivity and Infotainment -

Volvo's Sensus Connect infotainment system is projected brightly on a 9.0-inch touchscreen from its prominent and some what canted position in the center of the XC40's dashboard. Almost everything in the cabin is controlled by this screen, but there are a few physical buttons that are superfluous. The usability of the system is a mixed bag: The major menus are well-organized, but submenus have little touchscreen icons that are difficult to utilize while on the go. We also noticed a lot of slowness when the machine first started up.

Features for Driver Assistance and Safety -

Volvo comes equipped with a slew of driver-assistance features, including automated emergency braking. More advanced technologies, such as a semi-autonomous driving mode, are available as an option. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites for more information on the XC40's crash-test results. The following are important safety feature seeds trains recognition and standard autonomous emergency braking.

  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist is standard.
  • Cruise control with a moderately driving mode is available.
  • Warranties and Service Coverage.

Volvo's warranty coverage is adequate, and the three years of free annual maintenance are a great bonus. Unfortunately, there's nothing here that distinguishes the XC40 from its competitors, who all provide nearly the same coverage.
